The multidisciplinary team of cardiac experts from Cooper University Health Care<\/a>\u2019s Structural Heart Disease Program recently performed the 1000th<\/sup> TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement) procedure. The procedure was successfully performed on a 71-year-old South Jersey man.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis represents a major milestone and the culmination of many years of training and experience for our Structural Heart Program and team since starting the TAVR<\/a> program in 2012,\u201d said Philip A. Koren, MD, FACC, FSCAI<\/a>, <\/strong>Medical Director of the Cooper Heart Institute, part of Cardiac Partners at Cooper and Inspira. \u00a0\u201cCooper continues to have one of the most innovative and experienced TAVR teams in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n

TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure that allows an interventional cardiologist to replace a diseased aortic valve due to aortic stenosis with a new valve without open heart surgery. The TAVR procedure involves using a catheter to feed an artificial valve through an artery in the groin or the chest to the heart. Once in the correct position, the artificial valve is opened and begins to function immediately.<\/p>\n

The multidisciplinary team, which includes cardiologists, anesthesiologists, radiologists, nurses, and technicians among others, work in a coordinated way to assess patients and perform the TAVR procedure. They use a state-of-the-art hybrid operating room, combining advanced imaging technology and facilities that allow the team to perform this delicate implant procedure. Cooper has performed more TAVR procedures than any other hospital in southern New Jersey.<\/p>\n

In 2018, Cooper and Inspira Health Network formed a joint venture to integrate cardiac services. This affiliation, called\u00a0Cardiac Partners at Cooper and Inspira<\/a>, brings together the best-in-class cardiology practices and innovative health care systems of two leading medical providers: Cooper University Health Care and Inspira Health. The combination of the two makes Cardiac Partners the largest cardiac program in South Jersey.<\/p>\n

TAVR es un procedimiento m\u00ednimamente invasivo que permite a un cardi\u00f3logo intervencionista reemplazar una v\u00e1lvula a\u00f3rtica enferma debido a estenosis a\u00f3rtica con una nueva v\u00e1lvula sin cirug\u00eda a coraz\u00f3n abierto. El procedimiento TAVR implica el uso de un cat\u00e9ter para alimentar una v\u00e1lvula artificial a trav\u00e9s de una arteria en la ingle o el pecho hasta el coraz\u00f3n. Una vez en la posici\u00f3n correcta, la v\u00e1lvula artificial se abre y comienza a funcionar inmediatamente.<\/p>\n

El equipo multidisciplinario, el cual incluye cardi\u00f3logos, anestesi\u00f3logos, radi\u00f3logos, enfermeras y t\u00e9cnicos entre otros, trabaja de manera coordinada para evaluar a los pacientes y realizar el procedimiento de TAVR. Usan un quir\u00f3fano h\u00edbrido de \u00faltima generaci\u00f3n, que combina tecnolog\u00eda e instalaciones de im\u00e1genes avanzadas que permiten al equipo realizar este delicado procedimiento de implante. Cooper ha realizado m\u00e1s procedimientos de TAVR que cualquier otro hospital en el sur de Nueva Jersey.<\/p>\n
