\"\"<\/a>World Breastfeeding Week, August 1 -7,\u00a0was the perfect time to kick off an interdepartmental partnership to earn an elite designation for Children\u2019s Regional Hospital\u00a0at Cooper as a \u201cBaby-Friendly Hospital.”<\/p>\n

The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative\u00a0(BFHI) is a global program sponsored by\u00a0the World Health Organization (WHO)\u00a0and the United Nations Children\u2019s Fund\u00a0(UNICEF) that encourages hospitals to\u00a0offer the best level of care and support for\u00a0infant feeding and nutrition. Extensive\u00a0scientific research has shown that babies\u00a0and mothers reap significant health benefits from breastfeeding whenever possible.<\/p>\n

The BFHI includes \u201cTen Steps to Successful Breastfeeding,\u201d which Children\u2019s\u00a0Regional Hospital at Cooper is working\u00a0to support. From having newborn infants\u00a0\u201croom in\u201d with their mothers, spending\u00a0as much time together as possible after\u00a0birth, to fostering breastfeeding support\u00a0groups for mothers, these steps help\u00a0ensure the best health outcomes possible\u00a0for infants and their mothers \u2013 and better\u00a0overall health for the nation in the future.<\/p>\n

Earning the \u201cBaby-Friendly Hospital\u201d\u00a0designation is a lengthy process, and onlyabout 110 hospitals nationwide have received the distinction. As the committee does its work, look for signs of Cooper\u2019s\u00a0support for a baby-friendly environment,\u00a0including establishing new policies, opening\u00a0pumping rooms for employees, and more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
