Brill, MD\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/physicians\/kristin-l-brill-md\">Kristin L. Brill<\/a>, MD, Program Director, <a title=\"Janet Knowles Breast Cancer Center\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/departments-programs\/breast-cancer-center\">The Janet Knowles\u00a0Breast Cancer Center<\/a>\u00a0at Cooper Cancer Institute. \u201cA\u00a0woman&#8217;s risk may be increased if she has a strong family history of breast cancer,\u00a0especially in first-degree relatives diagnosed before the age of 50,\u201d says Brill. She says that prophylactic mastectomy\u00a0may offer a 90 percent\u00a0reduction\u00a0in risk for developing\u00a0breast cancer for women who are deemed at higher risk. Prophylactic mastectomy\u00a0typically is performed with simultaneous or &#8220;immediate&#8221; <a title=\"breast reconstruction surgery\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/treatments\/breast-reconstruction-surgery\">breast reconstruction surgery<\/a>, says Brill.<\/p>\n<p>Blood tests to identify genetic markers are available for breast and ovarian cancer, and for colorectal, endometrial and other gastrointestinal cancers.
