Study Reviews Guidelines for the Treatment of Men With Low Testosterone Levels \u2013 Data Supports Use of Current Standards <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Allen D. Seftel, MD<\/a>, FACS, Head of the Division of Urology<\/a> at Cooper University Health Care, has published the results of a study in the August issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings<\/em>, a leading medical journal.<\/p>\n

Dr. Seftel\u2019s study, \u201cCritical Update of the 2010 Endocrine Society Clinical Practice Guidelines for Male Hypogonadism: A Systematic Analysis,\u201d reviewed case data to determine if clinical evidence continues to support the use of guidelines established in 2010 to treat male hypogonadism (\u201cTestosterone Therapy in Men with Androgen Deficiency Syndromes: An Endocrine Society Clinical Practice Guideline,\u201d) or if modifications to some of the guidelines were warranted.<\/p>\n

Male hypogonadism is a condition in which the body doesn’t produce enough testosterone. Patients can be born with hypogonadism, or it can develop later in life from injury or infection.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe current guidelines are an important document which provides valuable guidance regarding the diagnosis and evaluation of a patient with suspected hypogonadism, indications for treatment, information on various available treatment modalities and recommend monitoring regimens,\u201d said Dr. Seftel. \u201cHowever, since publication of the guidelines, there have been a variety of high-quality trials that have expanded our understanding of the beneficial and adverse effects of testosterone replacement therapy. We performed a systematic analysis to determine if or how the guidelines should be modified and found that available data reinforces the current standards.\u201d<\/p>\n

A systematic analysis of level 1 evidence trials examining the safety and efficacy of TRT published since 2010 largely reinforces the Endocrine Society Guidelines<\/p>\n
