The Kiva\u00ae VCF Treatment System, the first new approach to the treatment of VCFs in more than a decade, significantly reduces pain and helps restores function to patients.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7359\" style=\"width: 191px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7359\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7359\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/news\/files\/2016\/11\/Hamza-A-Shaikh.jpg\" alt=\"Hamza A. Shaikh, MD\" width=\"181\" height=\"223\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7359\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hamza A. Shaikh, MD<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cA vertebral compression\u00a0fracture\u00a0occurs when the block-like part of an individual bone of the spine\u00a0(vertebra) become compressed due to\u00a0trauma,\u201d explained <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/physicians\/hamza-shaikh-md\">Hamza A. Shaikh, MD<\/a>, Co-Director of Neurointerventional Surgery, who performed the procedure. The Kiva System uses a flexible implant to reduce spinal fractures and provide structural support to the spine.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, about 700,000 to 1 million Americans suffer VCFs primarily due to osteoporosis and cancer. The micro breaks in the vertebra can lead to severe pain and disability, and the problem is expected to grow as the population ages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe use of such cutting edge technology gives patients at Cooper more options when dealing with these types of fractures,\u201d said Dr. Shaikh. \u201cWe look forward to expanding the use of Kiva in the treatment of VCF to provide patients with the best outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kiva is FDA approved for all types of vertebral fractures including both cancer and trauma-related.
