Dr. Mazurek will lead the Institute as it leverages shared resources throughout the Cooper Health System to grow sponsored research. Cooper will be increasing the number of academic studies positioning Cooper University Physicians to be the academic faculty for the proposed four year medical school in Camden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearch is essential in order to make progress in medicine. The number of research grants at Cooper is growing, and Dr. Mazurek will help us achieve national prominence, continuing our mission to make a real difference in patients\u2019 lives,\u201d said Carolyn Bekes, M.D., Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Mazurek brings a wealth of research management experience to the position from industry and for the past five years at Cooper as initially the Director of Research for the Division of Cardiovascular Disease and Critical Medicine and most recently for the Department of Medicine.  He was instrumental in obtaining funding from the Salem Health and Wellness Foundation for the Salem County Cardiovascular Health Initiative and will remain its administrative director as well.<\/p>\n<p>Through basic and clinical research, faculty at Cooper University Hospital are bringing scientific discoveries to life and providing thousands of patients in South Jersey with access to cutting-edge treatments in fields such as cancer, cardiology, critical care, diabetes, and gene therapy.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper faculty members currently conduct approximately 340 NIH and industry-sponsored clinical trials each year.
