First in South Jersey\/ One of Only Seven in New Jersey to Achieve Gold Seal of Approval<\/h2>\n

Cooper University Health Care announced that it has earned The Joint Commission\u2019s Gold Seal of Approval\u00ae <\/sup>and the American Heart Association\/American Stroke Association\u2019s Heart-Check mark for Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Centers<\/a>. The Gold Seal of Approval\u00ae<\/sup> and the Heart-Check mark represent hospitals with the highest level of stroke care and are symbols of quality from their respective organizations.\u00a0 Cooper is one of only seven hospitals in New Jersey and the first\u00a0in South Jersey to achieve this significant certification.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the leading academic medical center in South Jersey, patients have come to rely upon Cooper to provide the most advanced and\u00a0highest quality health care. Receiving designation as a Comprehensive\u00a0Stroke Center is another demonstration of our commitment to our patients and to providing the highest level of care,\u201d said Adrienne Kirby, PhD, FACHE<\/a>, Cooper\u2019s president and chief executive officer. \u00a0\u201cWe are honored to be nationally recognized for the efforts of our physicians, nurses, and support staff in providing the highest level of stroke care to our patients.\u201d<\/p>\n

With this certification, Cooper joins an elite group of health care organizations focused on highly specialized stroke care. To be eligible, hospitals must demonstrate compliance with stroke-related standards as a Primary Stroke Center<\/a> and meet additional requirements, including those related to advanced imaging capabilities, availability of specialized treatments, and providing staff with the unique education and competencies to care for complex stroke patients.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur team went through a rigorous evaluation by The Joint Commission and we are proud of this certification that demonstrates to our patients, and their families, that they are receiving the most comprehensive stroke care at Cooper,\u201d said H. “By achieving this advanced certification, Cooper has thoroughly demonstrated the greatest level of commitment to the care of its patients with a complex stroke condition,\u201d says Mark R. Established in 2012, Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Centers is awarded for a two-year period to Joint Commission-accredited acute care hospitals. The certification was derived from the Brain Attack Coalition\u2019s \u201cRecommendations for Comprehensive Stroke Centers\u201d (Stroke<\/em>, 2005), \u201c<\/em>Metrics for Measuring Quality of Care in Comprehensive Stroke Centers\u201d (Stroke<\/em>, 2011) and recommendations from a multidisciplinary advisory panel of experts in complex stroke care. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Stroke is the number five cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States, according to the American Heart Association\/American Stroke Association. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.<\/p>\n
