Lombardi, MD, FACS<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In early September, a surgical team at Cooper University Health Care, led by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/physicians\/joseph-v-lombardi-md\">Joseph V. Lombardi, MD, FACS<\/a>, head of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/departments-programs\/vascular-and-endovascular-surgery\">Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery<\/a> and director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/departments-programs\/aortic-center\">Cooper Aortic Center<\/a>, became the first in New Jersey to perform a new minimally-invasive treatment for complicated arch aortic aneurysms.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper is one of only a handful of hospi\u00adtals in the region\u2014and fewer than 40 nationwide\u2014participating in a pivotal study of the GORE\u00ae TAG\u00ae Thoracic Branch Endoprosthesis (TBE). \u00a0The device treats thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAA), which generally occur in the elderly and can lead to a life-threatening rupture of the aorta. Designed to seal-off a hard-to-treat section of the aorta, the device potentially provides a safe and less invasive alternative to complex open surgical repair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe GORE TAG Thoracic Branch Endoprosthesis offers a less invasive treatment option specifically designed for these challenging cases,\u201d said Dr. Lombardi.\u00a0 \u201cWe can treat many types of aneurysms with a stent graft, but there are limitations when the aortic arch is involved. \u00a0And while thoracic aortic aneurysms are less common than abdominal aortic aneurysms, TAA ruptures are more likely to be fatal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The objective of the GORE\u00ae TAG\u00ae study is to determine the safety and efficacy of the TBE in treating lesions of the aortic arch and descending thoracic aorta, which includes dissection, trauma, or aneurysm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCooper University Health Care is committed to providing the most advanced and innovative care to patients with cardiovascular diseases,\u201d said Dr. Lombardi. \u201cBy participating in this trial we are demonstrating our dedication to advancing medical science and expanding treatment options for patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>###<\/p>\n<p>Wendy A.
