Cooper University Health Care and Advanced Recovery Systems (ARS), which operates addiction and substance abuse treatment centers in five states, announced the joining of forces to form a partnership to provide addiction recovery services to patients in the region. Together, ARS and Cooper are building a state-of-the-art, $27 million, 90-bed inpatient treatment facility in Cherry Hill, New Jersey; the first of several planned treatment facilities in the region.<\/p>\n

\u201cDrug addiction and deaths from drug overdoses, particularly opioids, continue to rise nationally and Cooper physicians are dealing with the results of addiction every day,\u201d said George E. Norcross, III, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Cooper University Health Care. \u201cThere\u2019s a clear need for responsible and effective treatment centers for patients and we look forward to working with ARS to create a facility that will fill an existing gap in the continuum of care and offer quality treatment for Cooper patients and all who are seeking recovery from addiction.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pace of drug overdose deaths continues to rise in New Jersey. Last year, the CDC estimates there were 2,715 overdose deaths<\/a> in the state, up more than 16 percent from the year prior, equating to more than seven deaths per day.<\/p>\n

Patients to the new ARS and Cooper facility will have access to a comprehensive range of evidence-based addiction treatment services, wellness programs, and amenities. \u00a0The new facility will include dedicated recreational activity areas for patients, including a yoga room, indoor basketball and volleyball courts, and a large workout gym.<\/p>\n

As an urban academic health care system, Cooper has extensive experience treating patients with addiction and its Emergency Department treats between five and 20 patients daily for opioid overdose or other opioid-related health issues. Due to a shortage of local, evidence-based community recovery programs, Cooper launched its Addiction Medicine Program in 2015. The program is managed by addiction medicine fellowship-trained and board-certified physicians who provide effective medical care and comprehensive addiction treatment services in the inpatient, outpatient, and chronic care settings.<\/p>\n

A Quality Committee with representatives from both institutions will be formed to monitor and establish quality and evidenced-based treatment guidelines as well as provide recommendations on best practices and new developments in the treatment of substance use disorder. The new facility will be located on the former Baker Bowling Lanes property on Cuthbert Boulevard and is scheduled to be completed in late 2019.<\/p>\n
