Studies have shown that compassion from caregivers \u2013 as perceived by patients \u2013 can lead to improved outcomes for patients, lower health care costs, and even reduced burnout among health care providers. As researchers examine the effect of compassion on these outcomes, a key question that emerges is \u201chow do we measure compassion?\u201d Specifically, can caregiver compassion be measured on a large scale basis across entire health care systems?<\/p>\n<p>A team of researchers at Cooper University Health Care and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, led by physician scientist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/doctors\/brian-roberts-md\">Brian W. Roberts, MD, MSc<\/a>, an emergency medicine specialist, developed and validated a tool for measuring caregiver compassion from the patient perspective that can be used in conjunction with the Clinician and Group Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CG-CAHPS) survey, a method for measuring patient satisfaction in an outpatient clinic setting that is already in wide use across the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The research was published on May 17, 2019, in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2733433?resultClick=3\"><em>JAMA Network Open<\/em><\/a>, published by the American Medical Association.<\/p>\n<p>In this study of 6,493 adult patients who were treated in outpatient clinics, Roberts and colleagues found that a simple five-item tool was a valid and reliable way to measure patient assessment of caregiver compassion. Further, by incorporating the tool into an existing platform for measuring patient experience (i.e., the CG-CAHPS survey), patient assessment of caregiver compassion can be measured on a large scale.<\/p>\n<p>The tool, called the \u201cfive-item compassion measure\u201d, assessed \u2013 from the patient perspective \u2013 how well health care providers did the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cared about patients\u2019 emotional and psychological well-being.<\/li>\n<li>Were interested in patients as a whole person.<\/li>\n<li>Were considerate of patients\u2019 personal needs.<\/li>\n<li>Were able to gain patients\u2019 trust.<\/li>\n<li>Showed patients care and compassion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cAs we further study the effects of compassion on patients and patient care, it is important for the medical community to have validated methods of measurement in what was once thought to be a \u2018soft\u2019 science,\u201d said Dr. Roberts.<\/p>\n<p>According to the paper\u2019s co-author, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/doctors\/stephen-trzeciak-md\">Stephen W. Trzeciak, MD, MPH<\/a>, chief of medicine at Cooper: \u201cCompassion has always been a vital aspect of the \u2018art of medicine,\u2019 but with more and more research showing that compassion also has measurable beneficial effects belonging in the science of medicine, we needed to develop a standardized way of measuring compassion in practice.\u201d\u00a0 Dr. Trzeciak is also co-author of the new book, <em>Compassionomics:\u00a0 The Revolutionary Scientific Evidence that Caring Makes a Difference<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the research team, this study is a first step. Additional testing of the five-item compassion measure among varying cohorts of patients is needed to validate wide use of this tool in health care organizations.<\/p>\n<p>####<\/p>\n<p>Wendy A.
