Cooper is providing VV ECMO which is specific to patients with damaged and\/or injured lungs.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9870\" style=\"width: 198px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9870\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9870\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/news\/files\/2019\/06\/Nitin-K-Puri-MD.jpg\" alt=\"Nitin K Puri, MD\" width=\"188\" height=\"235\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9870\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nitin K Puri, MD<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAs an academic tertiary care health system, Cooper is known for providing advanced critical care services,\u201d said Nitin K. Puri, MD, Program Director, Critical Care Medicine. \u201cThe addition of ECMO will provide critically ill patients with severe, but reversible, respiratory failure a new potentially life-saving treatment option without having to travel extra distance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Dr. Puri, ECMO mimics the natural function of the lungs by delivering oxygen into the patient&#8217;s blood. The ECMO procedure involves channeling the patient&#8217;s blood into a pump that sends blood through an oxygenator, which serves as an artificial lung, infusing the blood with oxygen and removing carbon dioxide and returning it to the patient.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper is the only hospital in South Jersey to offer a multidisciplinary team approach to critical care including dedicated critical care physicians\u00a0\u2013\u00a0called intensivists\u00a0\u2013\u00a0who provide round-the-clock, on-site care.
