The Cooper Cancer Institute and Cooper Bone and Joint Institute have partnered to open the Orthopaedic Oncology Center, a\u00a0 multidisciplinary program dedicated to treating metastatic bone \u00a0tumors, sarcomas\u00a0 and \u00a0benign tumors of the bone and soft tissue. Under the \u00a0direction\u00a0 of \u00a0Richard \u00a0D. Lackman, MD,<\/a> FACS, this comprehensive program is the first of its kind in South Jersey.<\/p>\n

Dr. Lackman, a nationally recognized expert and the first fellowship-trained orthopaedic oncologist in the Philadelphia region, joined Cooper after serving as Associate Director, Patient and Family Services at the\u00a0 Abramson Cancer Center and Director, Sarcoma Center of Excellence, both at the University of Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n

Benign or malignant tumors can develop in the large or small bones of the limbs, spine and pelvis and in muscles, fat, joints, nerves\u00a0 or blood vessels. Primary malignant tumors of bone ( bone sarcomas) \u00a0affect \u00a0approximately \u00a03,000 people in the United States annually, while primary \u00a0malignant \u00a0tumors \u00a0of soft\u00a0tissue (soft \u00a0tissue sarcomas) affect about\u00a010,000 people.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause of their rarity and complexity, musculoskeletal \u00a0tumors pose \u00a0difficult challenges \u00a0when \u00a0it comes to diagnoses and treatment. At\u00a0 Cooper, we take\u00a0 a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care that puts\u00a0 an entire team of experts behind each patient, every step of the way,\u201d says Dr. Lackman. \u201cBeginning with an accurate diagnosis, we create an individualized \u00a0treatment \u00a0plan \u00a0for \u00a0each\u00a0patient using the most advanced options available in a\u00a0 compassionate and caring environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

This team collaborates daily to provide patients with access to cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment technologies,\u00a0 innovative limb- sparing and reconstructive surgery, the latest\u00a0 clinical\u00a0 trials,\u00a0 and \u00a0a \u00a0full range \u00a0of supportive care services.<\/p>\n
