Cooper University Hospital \u00a0hand surgeons Yuan Y. Liu, MD; David \u00a0A.\u00a0 Fuller, MD<\/a>; \u00a0and \u00a0Adam \u00a0D. \u00a0Perry, MD, \u00a0are performing\u00a0 a \u00a0breakthrough\u00a0 procedure \u00a0to \u00a0help treat patients with Dupuytren\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n

Dupuytren\u2019s disease is an abnormal thickening and contracture of the tissue just below the skin of the palm of the hand. Too much collagen can build up, forming thick, rope-like cords\u00a0 of tissue that can prevent the fingers from being able to relax and straighten normally.<\/p>\n

The FDA \u00a0recently approved Xiaflex\u00ae, the first minimally invasive treatment for Dupuytren\u2019s disease. Collagenase, a biologically active enzyme, is injected to break down scar tissue formed \u00a0during the\u00a0 progression of\u00a0 the\u00a0 disease. The treatment for Dupuytren\u2019s disease has traditionally been surgical and required the excision or release of the palmer fascia. Traditional surgery\u00a0 involves a number of incisions, a long recovery, and in many cases, physical therapy.<\/p>\n

\u201cXiaflex is intended to dissolve the diseased tissue, rather than\u00a0 cut \u00a0it out,\u201d says Dr.\u00a0 Fuller, Director, Hand and\u00a0 Upper Extremity Surgery, Cooper\u2019s Bone and Joint Institute. \u201cIf the injections are effective, surgery may not be necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c This is a much better option for many patients,\u201d adds Dr. Liu, Attending Surgeon, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery \u00a0and \u00a0Assistant \u00a0Director, Plastic \u00a0Surgery \u00a0Fellowship. \u201c We have hope \u00a0that this medical \u00a0break through \u00a0will return t he use \u00a0of a person\u2019s hand before the contracture results in loss \u00a0of function.\u201d<\/p>\n

In clinical \u00a0studies done \u00a0with Xiaflex, 44 \u00a0percent to 64 percent of patients who received the injections had a straight or near-straight finger after up to three sessions. Rare side effects may include tendon rupture or ligament damage, nerve injury, or allergic reactions.<\/p>\n
