Along with movement disorder neurologist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/physicians\/andrew-mcgarry-md\">Andrew McGarry, MD<\/a>, previously of the University of Rochester\u2019s Center for Human Experimental Therapeutics, Dr. Colcher leads the integrated program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur team includes neurologists, neurosurgeons, nurses, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, social workers, nutritionists and behavioral health therapists,\u201d says Dr. McGarry. \u201cWe address every element of the disorders to maximize our patients\u2019 quality of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe work together daily to help patients understand and manage their disease,\u201d adds Dr. Colcher. \u201cEach patient\u2019s treatment plan is unique, combining medications \u2013 including Botox injections \u2013 physical therapy and surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/treatments\/deep-brain-stimulation-dbs\">Deep brain stimulation (DBS),<\/a> a surgical technique approved by the FDA to help treat<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/conditions\/parkinsons-disease\"> Parkinson\u2019s disease<\/a> and dystonia, offers benefits for disorders resistant to other treatments,\u201d says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/physicians\/h-warren-goldman-md\">H. Warren Goldman, MD, PhD,<\/a> Director, Cooper Neurological Institute. The DBS device is surgically implanted and sends electrical impulses strategically throughout the brain to relieve physical symptoms of the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Drs. Colcher and McGarry are accredited investigators in the Parkinson\u2019s Study Group (PSG) and the Huntington\u2019s Study Group (HSG), national consortiums dedicated to clinical research. Patients are being recruited for Parkinson\u2019s and Huntington\u2019s disease research, with new trials being considered routinely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParticipation in research is a way for patients to contribute to the advancement of movement disorders knowledge and to help develop the next generation of treatments,\u201d says Dr. McGarry.<\/p>\n<p>The Cooper Movement Disorder Center welcomes referrals for Parkinson\u2019s disease, atypical parkinsonism (including progressive supranuclear palsy, multiple system atrophy, corticobasal degeneration, and Lewy Body Disease), Huntington\u2019s disease, tremor,chorea, dystonia, ataxia, tics, and any other involuntary movement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the Cooper Movement Disorders Center, our multidisciplinary team uses the latest treatments, technology, and research to help patients suffering from debilitating movement disorders find relief.
