And you\u2019re trying\u00a0to find the equivalent of a quarter-size\u00a0lesion using a small needle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past, we\u2019d view CT results,\u00a0approximate where the nodule was, and\u00a0try to navigate the airways to reach it,\u201d\u00a0he continues. \u201cBut we often were wrong\u00a0because there were just too many turns to\u00a0make. We needed a GPS system to guide\u00a0us to the nodule.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is what SPiNView provides,\u201d he\u00a0adds. \u201cIt enables you to create a roadmap\u00a0to the target, follow it and, once there, it\u00a0tells you you\u2019re inside so you can obtain a\u00a0specimen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The SPiNView system also offers a\u00a0significant advantage over other navigation\u00a0bronchoscopy technology currently\u00a0available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe navigational guidance isn\u2019t just\u00a0endobronchial but also percutaneous,\u201d Dr.\u00a0Abouzgheib says. \u201cIf there\u2019s a nodule near\u00a0the chest wall but you can\u2019t reach it via\u00a0bronchoscopy because there\u2019s no airway\u00a0leading to it, SPiNView allows you to use a\u00a0needle from the outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo instead of stopping and\u00a0rescheduling the patient for a second\u00a0procedure, we can perform two procedures\u00a0during the same encounter,\u201d he adds. \u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0easier on the patient and speeds time to\u00a0diagnosis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another unique SPiNView advantage\u00a0is that the technology complements the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/departments-programs\/cyberknife\">CyberKnife <\/a>robotic radiosurgery system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA large portion of lung cancer\u00a0patients aren\u2019t surgical candidates due\u00a0to comorbidities, but they can be treated\u00a0with radiosurgery,\u201d Dr. Abouzgheib\u00a0notes. \u201cDuring navigational biopsy with\u00a0SPiNView, we can facilitate treatment by\u00a0placing the fiducial markers necessary for\u00a0subsequent CyberKnife therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As more current and former smokers\u00a0undergo low-dose CT screening based on\u00a0the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force\u00a0guidelines, the appropriate selection of\u00a0patients for biopsy is the key to efficacy\u00a0and cost-effectiveness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t biopsy every nodule we\u00a0pick up, just the ones that are suspicious,\u201d\u00a0Dr. Abouzgheib stresses, noting that about\u00a096 percent of nodules his team detects\u00a0are benign. \u201cYou want your patient to be\u00a0evaluated by someone who sees a high\u00a0volume of these cases, and that\u2019s what we\u00a0do here at Cooper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving such advanced technology\u00a0allows Cooper to be one of the few\u00a0institutions in the region to offer patients\u00a0earlier, quicker, and more efficacious\u00a0diagnosis of suspicious lung nodules,\u201d says\u00a0R.
