On the Leading Edge: Advanced Cardiac Surgery at Cooper<\/p><\/div>\n

When it comes to advanced cardiac\u00a0and thoracic surgical services, the Cooper\u00a0Heart Institute<\/a>\u2019s cardiothoracic surgery\u00a0team lives up to the designation \u201cworld-class.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a phenomenal group of\u00a0surgeons with complementary skillsets and\u00a0an exemplary success rate,\u201d says Phillip A.\u00a0Koren, MD<\/a>, the Institute\u2019s medical director.\u00a0\u201cNo one else in this region is able\u2014or\u00a0willing\u2014to do all the highly specialized\u00a0procedures that our team does.\u201d<\/p>\n

These capabilities include minimally\u00a0invasive valve and bypass surgery, advanced\u00a0aortic surgery, including endovascular as\u00a0well as complex root surgery, mitral valve\u00a0repair, and robotic-assisted cardiac surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe pioneered minimally invasive\u00a0techniques with both mitral and aortic\u00a0valve replacement procedures here\u00a0in the\u00a0Delaware Valley,\u201d says Michael Rosenbloom,\u00a0MD, FACS, FACC, FACCP<\/a>, codirector\u00a0of Cooper\u2019s Heart Institute and\u00a0head of the Division of Cardiac Surgery<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In fact, a large percentage of Cooper\u2019s\u00a0cardiac surgery volume\u2014one of the largest\u00a0in the region\u2014is made up of valve\u00a0procedures. Of these, nearly all of aortic\u00a0valve replacement surgeries and most of\u00a0the mitral valve procedures are performed\u00a0minimally invasively using a non-sternotomy\u00a0approach that dramatically lowers\u00a0complication rates and results in less pain\u00a0and faster recovery.<\/p>\n

Cooper also pioneered endovascular\u00a0valve replacement in the region. Notably,\u00a0Cooper was the first commercial site for the\u00a0Edwards SAPIEN transcatheter heart valve<\/a>\u00a0as well as the only New Jersey hospital to\u00a0participate in the subsequent PARTNER II\u00a0clinical trial, making the next generation\u00a0of transcatheter aortic valve replacement\u00a0(TAVR) <\/a>technology available\u2014extending\u00a0its application to patients at moderate risk\u00a0for surgery. Today, Cooper not only has\u00a0performed more TAVR procedures than\u00a0any other hospital in the South Jersey\u00a0region but also is one of the highest-volume\u00a0sites in the nation.<\/p>\n

Mitral valve repair is another area in\u00a0which Cooper excels. It is a highly specialized\u00a0area of expertise in that the majority\u00a0of mitral valve repair surgeries in the U.S.\u00a0are performed by a small percentage of cardiac\u00a0surgeons. While all Cooper\u2019s cardiac\u00a0surgeons are facile with this procedure, Dr.\u00a0Rosenbloom is a nationally known expert,\u00a0having performed mitral valve repairs for\u00a0nearly 30 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s my main passion in cardiac surgery,\u201d\u00a0he notes.<\/p>\n

As a result, a patient with a leaking\u00a0mitral valve has a better chance of having it\u00a0repaired at Cooper versus replaced, resulting\u00a0in less stress on the heart muscle. This,\u00a0too, is performed minimally invasively\u00a0whenever appropriate, translating into a\u00a0shorter length of stay and faster recovery.<\/p>\n

Cooper\u2019s approach to coronary artery\u00a0bypass surgery<\/a> (CABG) is on the leading\u00a0edge, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur colleague, Richard Y. Highbloom,\u00a0MD, FACS<\/a>, is a big proponent of using\u00a0multiple arterial conduits in bypass surgery\u00a0when possible,\u201d Dr. Rosenbloom says.\u00a0\u201cThere\u2019s mounting evidence that they\u2019re\u00a0more durable than veins and confer more\u00a0long-term benefit. Patients are more likely\u00a0to have this at Cooper.\u201d<\/p>\n

Further, he notes, his team is performing\u00a0some single, double, and sometimes\u00a0triple bypass procedures minimally invasively,\u00a0with and without the daVinci robot.<\/p>\n

\u201cAltogether, these capabilities aren\u2019t\u00a0available anyplace in South Jersey,\u201d notes\u00a0Frank W. Bowen, III, MD, FACS<\/a>, director\u00a0of thoracic aortic surgery and associate\u00a0director of the Cooper Aortic Center<\/a>, \u201cand\u00a0this puts us on a par with larger academic\u00a0institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patient outcomes are the ultimate\u00a0measure of Cooper\u2019s cardiac surgery expertise.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve maintained a three-star rating\u00a0from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for\u00a0the last five years,\u201d Dr. Highbloom notes,\u00a0referring to the highest quality tier of the\u00a0STS rating system. \u201cThis places us among\u00a0the top five to ten percent of hospitals in\u00a0the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur strength is an integrated\u00a0multidisciplinary approach,\u201d Dr. Rosenbloom\u00a0adds. \u201cWe surgeons can\u2019t take any\u00a0more credit for these results than our\u00a0anesthesiologists, critical care specialists,\u00a0cardiologists, nurses, and technicians. We\u00a0work well together; we really are a team in\u00a0every sense.\u201d<\/p>\n
