{"id":1743,"date":"2017-10-01T08:56:36","date_gmt":"2017-10-01T08:56:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/sjmedicalreport\/?p=1743"},"modified":"2018-08-10T19:00:16","modified_gmt":"2018-08-10T19:00:16","slug":"coopers-hand-and-nerve-surgery-center-advanced-expertise-for-complex-hand-injuries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/sjmedicalreport\/2017\/10\/01\/coopers-hand-and-nerve-surgery-center-advanced-expertise-for-complex-hand-injuries\/","title":{"rendered":"Cooper\u2019s Hand and Nerve Surgery Center: Advanced Expertise for Complex Hand Injuries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With a team of four hand surgeons,\u00a0Cooper\u2019s Hand and Nerve Surgery Center\u2014a collaboration between the Division\u00a0of Plastic Surgery and the Cooper Bone &amp;\u00a0Joint Institute\u2014offers a level of specialized\u00a0upper extremity surgical expertise that\u2019s\u00a0rare in the South Jersey region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough this integrated program,\u00a0we have plastic and orthopaedic surgeons\u00a0working together to reconstruct upper extremity\u00a0deformities, whether they\u2019re traumatic\u00a0or congenital,\u201d says board-certified\u00a0orthopaedic surgeon David A. Fuller, MD,\u00a0Director, Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery.\u00a0\u201cI was the only certified hand surgeon\u00a0for some time, but we\u2019ve added three more\u00a0surgeons\u2014including people with specialty\u00a0expertise in congenital and pediatric disorders\u2014expanding our capacity to meet the\u00a0growing need in our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are willing and able to tackle\u00a0the complex cases,\u201d says Nicole J. Jarrett,\u00a0MD, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon\u00a0who is fellowship-trained in hand surgery.\u00a0\u201cThrough Cooper\u2019s Trauma program, we\u00a0see a lot of hand injuries, and we want to\u00a0help take care of these difficult problems\u00a0that are often underserved in this region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These difficult problems\u00a0include comminuted or\u00a0compound fractures, brachial plexus injuries, and conditions\u00a0that require tendon repair,\u00a0replantation of fingers and\u00a0hands, nerve transfer, repair\u00a0or release, revascularized bone\u00a0grafting, and skin grafts and flaps.<\/p>\n<p>She cites a recent case in\u00a0which a patient\u2019s wrist bone\u00a0hadn\u2019t healed despite two previous\u00a0surgeries performed elsewhere.\u00a0\u201cWe took a piece of bone from the\u00a0patient\u2019s leg, along with the blood supply,\u00a0and reconnected it in the wrist under the\u00a0surgical microscope,\u201d Dr. Jarrett relates.\u00a0\u201cWe did this as a team\u2014orthopaedics and\u00a0plastic surgery\u2014so it was tremendously efficient. And the outcome was successful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith our expanded team, we\u2019re not\u00a0only better able to serve patients for this\u00a0type of challenging condition, but also\u00a0for everything else,\u201d she adds, referring\u00a0to more routine procedures such as joint\u00a0replacement and carpal tunnel release.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper\u2019s Hand and Nerve\u00a0Surgery Center has also added\u00a0a certified hand therapist to its team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherapy and rehabilitation\u00a0are important to patient\u00a0outcomes, whether with or\u00a0without surgery,\u201d Dr. Fuller\u00a0says. \u201cWe\u2019re committed to\u00a0providing the full spectrum\u00a0of services our community\u00a0needs, delivered in a way that\u2019s tailored to the individual patient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s this level of commitment that Drs. Fuller and Jarrett believe distinguishes\u00a0Cooper\u2019s Hand and Nerve Surgery Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe not only want to increase the\u00a0community\u2019s access to care but also\u00a0maintain the quality of care for an urban\u00a0population, and do it in a socially and culturally\u00a0responsible manner,\u201d Dr. Fuller says.\u00a0\u201cI think the volume we can now handle and\u00a0our willingness to provide this level of care really do set us apart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of the care we provide starts\u00a0with Cooper\u2019s Trauma unit, but we\u2019re\u00a0available to take referrals from the entire tri-state area,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistorically, there simply weren\u2019t\u00a0enough hand surgeons, so we didn\u2019t have\u00a0the staffing to see patients in a timely\u00a0manner,\u201d Dr. Jarrett says. \u201cNow, patients\u00a0with acute injuries can be seen in an efficient\u00a0manner and get an operation if and\u00a0when they need it. Patient access is much improved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s really no case that we\u2019ll refuse,\u201d\u00a0she adds. \u201cIf someone needs our help,\u00a0we\u2019re able and willing to help.
