Some of us have been doing ultrasonography for as many as 29 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs MFM specialists, the only ultrasounds we do are fetal ultrasounds,\u201d he continues. \u201cAs a result, our detection rate of birth defects is shown to be higher.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1793\" style=\"width: 198px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1793\" class=\"wp-image-1793 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/sjmedicalreport\/files\/2019\/07\/Robin-L-Perry-MD-MSEd-FACOG.jpg\" alt=\"Robin L Perry, MD, MSEd, FACOG\" width=\"188\" height=\"255\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1793\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Robin L Perry, MD, MSEd, FACOG<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s more, in most other radiology suites, patients aren\u2019t given the results of their ultrasound while they\u2019re there,\u201d Dr. Fischer notes. \u201cThat\u2019s not how we do it\u2014if we detect any issue, the doctor will come in and talk to the patient directly, interpreting the findings for the patient while she\u2019s here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another important feature of the MFM service is its flexibility in working with referring physicians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t have to send a patient to us to turn to us for help,\u201d says MFM specialist Robin Perry, MD, Chairman and Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. \u201cIf a community obstetrician feels they\u2019re facing an issue that\u2019s out of their scope of practice, needs a little guidance about what to ask a patient or which tests to run, or wonders whether a patient needs tertiary care or can stay closer to home\u2014give us a call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s more than being collaborative\u2014it\u2019s a patient safety issue, and we\u2019re here to help,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>The range of services Cooper\u2019s Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division offers is extensive, from prenatal to postpartum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur physicians perform all types of obstetrical ultrasound, including anatomy scans and fetal echocardiography, sequential screening, and procedures such as chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, umbilical blood sampling, fetal transfusions, and correction of fetal arrhythmias,\u201d Dr. Fischer says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also do wellbeing testing of the fetus, including non-stress testing, biophysical profiles, and Doppler velocimetry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The MFM team also has a board-certified genetic counselor who talks to patients about drug exposures and genetic issues, including those related to advanced maternal age.<\/p>\n<p>These services are easily accessible: Cooper\u2019s Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists see patients on an outpatient basis at seven offices throughout South and Central New Jersey (Camden, Voorhees, Washington Township, Willingboro, Princeton, and Cape May).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatients generally can be seen within a week, but we\u2019ll also add on patients the same day if it\u2019s a complex case,\u201d Dr. Perry says. \u201cOne of our rules is if a patient is tearful\u2014perhaps she received a worrisome test result\u2014we\u2019ll add her on so she doesn\u2019t have to go to sleep feeling stressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we also provide inpatient obstetrical services, one of our specialists is always available for any emergency that could arise, including deliveries\u2014 something you won\u2019t get with any other MFM practice in South Jersey,\u201d Dr. Fischer says.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, in case of emergency, Cooper\u2019s Transfer Center is staffed 24\/7 and provides a streamlined \u201chello-and-go\u201d service, accepting all patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll take care of lining up whatever other specialists need to be involved,\u201d Dr. Perry says. \u201cAnd we keep the referring physician informed throughout.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>For a physician-to-physician referral to Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Cooper, please contact our office at 856.342.2265.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Each year, thousands of South Jersey women are referred to Cooper\u2019s maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialists for their expertise in high-risk pregnancies.
