In patients who appear to be candidates based on a thorough physical examination and medical history, the pain management specialist first performs a diagnostic nerve block using a local anesthetic to identify the site of the pain. If this procedure produces analgesia, the neurolytic (neuroablative) block is performed under local anesthesia and mild sedation, using fluoroscopic guidance to inject alcohol or phenol. For the more common axial spine pain, the Pain Management Center at Cooper offers radiofrequency ablation, which can relieve pain for 6 to 9 months.
