The ranking places Cooper among the top 5% of hospitals in the nation for patient safety as evaluated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthgrades.com\/\">Healthgrades<\/a>, a leading resource that connects consumers, physicians, and health systems.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper is the only hospital in South Jersey to receive this year\u2019s award.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAchieving this Patient Safety Excellence Award two years in a row demonstrates Cooper\u2019s commitment and success in delivering the safest and most effective medical care to our patients,\u201d said Kevin O\u2019Dowd, JD, Co-CEO of Cooper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a leading academic health system in the region, our patients have come to expect safe and effective health care from our team of dedicated doctors, advanced practice providers, nurses, techs, and support staff and this award helps to reinforce the level of trust our patients place in our team at Cooper,\u201d said Anthony J. Mazzarelli, MD, JD, MBE, Co-CEO of Cooper.<\/p>\n<p>During the study period (2016 through 2018), Healthgrades 2020 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient hospitals demonstrated excellent performance in safeguarding patients in the Medicare population. The award is based upon 13 objective risk-adjusted patient safety indicators defined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).<\/p>\n<p>Healthgrades found that patients, treated in hospitals receiving the Patient Safety Excellence Award, were on average*:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>48.3% less likely to experience a collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.<\/li>\n<li>54.4% less likely to experience a hip fracture following surgery, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.<\/li>\n<li>66.8% less likely to experience pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.<\/li>\n<li>63% less likely to experience catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired at the hospital, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, if all hospitals in the country performed at the level of award recipients for each of the 13 patient safety indicators, 110,864 patient safety events could have been avoided.*<\/p>\n<p>View Healthgrades\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthgrades.com\/quality\/ratings-awards\/methodology\">hospital quality methodologies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumers might not know that information around patient safety is readily available and should be considered when researching healthcare options,\u201d said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. \u201cWe commend the recipients of the 2020 Patient Safety Excellence Award for their dedication to providing excellent care for their patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>*Statistics are calculated from Healthgrades Patient Safety Ratings and Excellence Award methodology which is based primarily on AHRQ technical specifications (Version 2019.0.1) to MedPAR data for years 2016 through 2018 and represent three-year estimates for Medicare patients only.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cooper has earned the 2020 Patient Safety Excellence Award&#x2122; from Healthgrades.
