It was written by abolitionist and lecturer William Wells Brown.<\/li>\n<li>William Tucker was the first known Black person to be born in the 13 colonies. He was born in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1624.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackpast.org\/african-american-history\/tucker-william-1624\/\">According to BlackPast.org<\/a>, his parents were indentured servants and part of the first group of Africans brought to colonial soil by Great Britain.<\/li>\n<li>Anthony Benezet, a white Quaker, abolitionist, and educator, is credited with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.quakersintheworld.org\/quakers-in-action\/60\/Anthony-Benezet\">creating the first public school<\/a>\u00a0for African American children\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/aia\/part3\/3p248.html\">in the early 1770s.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>After graduating from Oberlin College in 1850 with a literary degree,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/case.edu\/ech\/articles\/s\/stanton-day-sessions-lucy-ann\">Lucy Stanton became the first Black woman<\/a>\u00a0in America to earn a four-year college degree.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/columns\/hip-hop\/8533108\/sugar-hill-records-sylvia-robinson-hip-hop-godmother\">Dubbed &#8220;Hip-Hop&#8217;s First Godmother&#8221; by\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/columns\/hip-hop\/8533108\/sugar-hill-records-sylvia-robinson-hip-hop-godmother\">Billboard<\/a>, singer and music producer Sylvia Robinson produced the first-ever commercially successful rap record:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Rappers-Delight-Best-Sugarhill-Gang\/dp\/B0000033K4?tag=oprah-auto-20&amp;ascsubtag=%5bartid|10072.a.35181062%5bsrc|%5bch|%5blt|\">&#8220;Rapper&#8217;s Delight&#8221; by The Sugarhill Gang.<\/a>\u00a0And along with her husband, she co-owned the first hip-hop label, Sugar Hill Records.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/www.oprahmag.com\u00a0\u203a%20life%20\u203a%20black-history-facts\">Resource: 24 Black History Facts You May Not Know &#8211; Oprah Magazine<br \/>\nhttps:\/\/www.oprahmag.com\u00a0\u203a life \u203a black-history-facts<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cClotel\u201d (or, \u201cThe President\u2019s Daughter\u201d)\u00a0was the first novel published by an African American, in 1853.
