<\/p>\nRebecca Miller, BSN, RN, a staff nurse from Pavilion 10 (Trauma ICU)\u00a0at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, was announced as The DAISY Award winner for May\u00a02024. Rebecca\u2019s dedication to Cooper Nursing and the extraordinary care she provides to our Cooper patients earned her the following accolade.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis nurse is special because she advocated for her patients\u2019 dignified end of life care plan to come to fruition. This patient was an 89-year-old woman who was chronically ill with multiple disease processes, including chronic lung disease and an evolving gastrointestinal bleed. When she\u00a0was received\u00a0on this floor after a rapid response\u00a0was called, her doctors began ordering multiple tests, including CT scans and blood draws. She was also placed on high-flow oxygen. The patient stated\u00a0she did not want any of this and wanted to be with God. The nurse had a very open\u00a0conversation with the patient and her son, informing the patient that she had the right\u00a0to choose whether she wanted to participate\u00a0in any of the testing. The patient stated that she did not want another test, needle, or anything else\u2014she just wanted to close her eyes. The son mildly protested but then stated that he would never go against his mother\u2019s wishes; he just wanted her to be comfortable. The nurse explained how special this moment was, in that we see so much death on a regular basis and family members rarely get the chance to say their goodbyes. The nurse reinforced how special this moment was that the patient was able to make her own decisions about end-of-life\u00a0care, with the support of her family.\u00a0She said \u201cyou\u00a0get this day! We don\u2019t\u00a0see this enough; it\u2019s\u00a0a beautiful thing!\u201d When the physicians returned to the patient\u2019s\u00a0room, the nurse stated,\u00a0\u201cwe\u2019re going to go with comfort care just like the patient wants.\u201d\u00a0After an awkward\u00a0pause the physicians quickly\u00a0came on board with the patient\u2019s\u00a0wishes. The\u00a0fact that the nurse didn\u2019t\u00a0try to push the patient\u00a0to going full steam ahead\u00a0is a testament to the character and humbleness of this extremely passionate nurse. She described this time with the patient and family as a beautiful experience for all involved\u00a0and is hopeful that end-of-life\u00a0discussions in the future can continue to be the blessing that she experienced today. The patient passed peacefully and comfortably in a very\u00a0short amount\u00a0of time and her family was very grateful\u00a0for the compassion the nurse showed to all involved.\u201d<\/p>\n
