Blood Pressure Procedure Calms Overactive Nerves That Can Elevate Blood Pressure<\/em><\/p>\n

Cooper and Inspira Cardiac Care<\/a> now offers a new renal denervation (RDN) procedure for certain patients with high blood pressure. Clinicians at Cooper and Inspira Cardiac Care recently performed the first case using this new procedure at Cooper University Hospital in Camden.<\/p>\n

The \u00a0RDN system, by Symplicity Spyral\u2122, involves a minimally invasive procedure that targets nerves near the kidneys that can become overactive and cause high blood pressure. The procedure \u2013 also known as the Symplicity\u2122 blood pressure procedure \u2013 is FDA-approved for use as an adjunctive treatment in patients with high blood pressure (or hypertension) when lifestyle changes and antihypertensive medications do not adequately control blood pressure. It is primarily performed on an outpatient basis and often results in a patient requiring less blood pressure medication.<\/p>\n

\u201cHigh blood pressure is a significant problem for patients all around the world. For people with hypertension, medication or lifestyle changes can help reduce blood pressure, but studies have shown that many people still don\u2019t have control over their condition,\u201d said Brian Corbett, DO<\/a>, a cardiologist at Cooper and Inspira Cardiac Care who was part of the team that performed the first case.<\/p>\n

Interventional cardiologist Janah Aji, MD, FACC<\/a>, who was also part of the team, added, \u201cThis procedure can provide patients with a blood pressure reduction benefit that is \u2018always on\u2019 and doesn\u2019t require a permanent implant \u2013 it can also help patients regain their peace of mind. We are looking forward to the future of hypertension care and are proud to be offering innovative solutions to our patients.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hypertension is the single largest contributor to death and affects about 50% of U.S. adults. Of the U.S. adults who are aware of their hypertension, about 80% do not have it under control.<\/p>\n

This new blood pressure procedure is clinically proven to help reduce high blood pressure, which can lower serious health risks. After mild sedation, the doctor inserts\u00a0a very thin tube into the artery leading to the kidney. The doctor then administers radiofrequency energy to calm the excessive activity of the nerves connected to the kidney.
