To protect patient privacy, Cooper University Health Care will install new software by FairWarning called Patient Privacy Intelligence. The new software will be put into use on Monday, December 5, 2016<\/strong>, and will scan electronic medical records (EMR) in Epic to detect unauthorized access of medical records.<\/p>\n

As a Cooper employee, you may only access medical records and patient information that you need to perform your job responsibilities. All patients, including fellow employees who are patients, are entitled to the same privacy rights.<\/p>\n

You may not access the medical record of any individual<\/strong>, unless it is in the performance of your job responsibilities, without a signed, written<\/strong> authorization from that individual. Any unauthorized access of an individual\u2019s medical record or patient information is a HIPAA violation subject to termination under Cooper University Health Care\u2019s Sanction Policy as well as potential personal liability under the law.<\/p>\n

Any irregularities or unauthorized access of medical records detected by the FairWarning software will be investigated by the Information Security and Privacy staff, led by Phil Curran, CISO & CPO, and Human Resources.<\/p>\n
