{"id":9564,"date":"2019-04-30T17:32:58","date_gmt":"2019-04-30T21:32:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/weeklyrounds\/?p=9564"},"modified":"2019-04-30T17:32:58","modified_gmt":"2019-04-30T21:32:58","slug":"new-jersey-strong-hro-safety-behavior-r-reliably-communicate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/weeklyrounds\/2019\/04\/new-jersey-strong-hro-safety-behavior-r-reliably-communicate\/","title":{"rendered":"New Jersey STRONG HRO Safety Behavior: R = Reliably Communicate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of Cooper University Health Care\u2019s involvement in the New Jersey High Reliability Organization (HRO) Collaborative, also known as New Jersey STRONG, our goal is to train and educate staff on how to provide the best care to our patients in the safest environment.<\/p>\n<p>There are six safety behaviors that align with New Jersey STRONG\u2019s name and mission:<\/p>\n<p><strong>S <\/strong>\u2013 Speak Up for Safety<\/p>\n<p><strong>T<\/strong> \u2013 Think Critically<\/p>\n<p><strong>R<\/strong> \u2013 Reliably Communicate<\/p>\n<p><strong>O<\/strong> \u2013 On Task<\/p>\n<p><strong>N<\/strong> \u2013 No Harm<\/p>\n<p><strong>G<\/strong> \u2013 Got Your Back<\/p>\n<p>Over the next several months, we will educate staff on how to apply these safety tips \u2013 and their associated error prevention tools \u2013 to real life, on-the-job situations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R = Reliably Communicate:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The third piece of the NJ STRONG HRO safety behaviors is \u201cReliably Communicate,\u201d which is all about point-to-point communications. Good communication leads to good teamwork and good decisions, so we want to be rigorous and prudent in how we send and receive information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What should we do?<\/strong> Ensure that we hear things correctly and understand things accurately.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why should we do this?<\/strong> To prevent wrong assumptions and misunderstandings that could cause us to make wrong decisions.<\/p>\n<p>There are three error-prevention tools for this safety behavior that we will discuss during the coming months:<\/p>\n<p>The first is<strong> SBAR:<\/strong> An outline for planning and communicating information about a patient\u2019s condition or any other issue or problem.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>S<\/strong>ituation \u2013 the bottom line (diagnosis, current condition, problem)<\/li>\n<li><strong>B<\/strong>ackground \u2013 what do you know? (medical history, past tests, treatments)<\/li>\n<li><strong>A<\/strong>ssessment \u2013 what is happening now? (current findings, needs, concerns)<\/li>\n<li><strong>R<\/strong>ecommendation \u2013 what is next? (recommendation or request for plan of care)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When communicating, specifically use the words<strong> Situation<\/strong>,<strong> Background<\/strong>,<strong> Assessment<\/strong>, and<strong> Recommendation<\/strong> so that the listener knows the nature of the information you\u2019re giving.<\/p>\n<p>The SBAR can be used in clinical and non-clinical situations, orally, by phone, or in writing, such as in an email.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As part of Cooper University Health Care\u2019s involvement in the New Jersey High Reliability Organization (HRO) Collaborative, also known as New Jersey STRONG, our goal is to train and educate staff on how to provide the best care to our patients in the safest environment.
