For the first time in decades, Camden gets a new hotel<\/strong><\/p>\n

CAMDEN\u00a0\u2013 “Frank’s an expert at this,” joked Camden County Freeholder Jonathan Young as Frank Moran began marshaling VIPs milling around a mound of dirt with ceremonial shovels staked in it,\u00a0white hardhats balanced on their handles.<\/p>\n

Indeed, Camden’s mayor has had a lot of practice breaking ground, hoisting a spade at\u00a0new housing developments<\/a>, at\u00a0new manufacturing facilities<\/a>, at\u00a0rehabbed city parks<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But Tuesday was the first time in Moran’s lifetime that any Camden mayor has broken ground on a major hotel, and he was clearly relishing the moment.<\/p>\n

“Let’s give Philly something to look at!” Moran exclaimed as the dirt flew, with the Delaware River, Benjamin Franklin Bridge and Philadelphia skyline in the background\u00a0on a sunny spring day along the Camden Waterfront.<\/p>\n

“For years, (Philadelphia) looked across the river at a skeleton,” Moran said later. “Now they see\u00a0American Water<\/a>‘s headquarters, the\u00a0Connor Strong building<\/a>, the 76ers sign, the aquarium.”<\/p>\n

Camden once boasted grand hotels like the\u00a0Walt Whitman Hotel<\/a>, which opened at Broadway and Cooper Street in 1925. As the city fell into decline, however, so did the hotel, and it was vacant for several years before it was demolished in 2013 to make way for a city campus for Camden County College.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Hotel Plaza<\/a>\u00a0was built\u00a0on Cooper Street in 1927. After closing in 1985, it stood vacant for decades before it was demolished in 2014. A parking lot is now on the site at 5th and Cooper streets.<\/p>\n

The new 180-room Hilton Garden Inn, slated to open in October 2020, will include 5,000 square feet of dining, bar and event space; on-site parking and panoramic views of the river, bridge and Philadelphia skyline.<\/p>\n

In addition to about 75 permanent jobs, the hotel will bring to Camden a reason for people not only to come to the city, but to stay: Moran envisions visitors attending a concert on Friday night, going to the aquarium on Saturday afternoon and brunching on Sunday with a riverfront view\u00a0\u2014 all without decamping for hotels in Mount Laurel, Cherry Hill or Penns Landing. He imagines weddings and other events in the hotel’s ballrooms, with city lights across the river forming a photogenic backdrop.<\/p>\n

Noting the ties between South Jersey’s fortunes and Camden’s, Camden County Freeholder Jonathan Young said that the hotel would also bring visitors to the region.<\/p>\n

“This hotel will be the reason the county captures headlights instead of taillights,” Young said. “For so many years we’ve watched taillights go across the bridge.”<\/p>\n

For Clark Perks, development director of the Battleship New Jersey, it’s a place within the city to send those who are visiting the floating museum from all over the country. Visitors can take a tram along the waterfront from the battleship to the aquarium and eventually to the hotel.<\/p>\n

“I get calls from people all the time who want to know where they should stay,” said Perks. “I usually direct them to hotels in Philadelphia or to the Crowne Plaza (in Cherry Hill), but it will be great to have a hotel right here on the waterfront.”<\/p>\n
