After a nation-wide search, Cooper University Hospital is pleased to announce that Jeffrey P. Carpenter, M.D., has been appointed the new Chief of the Department of Surgery for the health system. Dr. Carpenter is a board certified vascular surgeon with clinical specialties in endovascular surgical techniques.
He joins Cooper after 23 years at the University of Pennsylvania Health System where he has been a Professor of Surgery and a Professor of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine since 2003.
“Dr. Carpenter’s superior clinical skills and administrative experience will provide outstanding leadership to our extraordinary team of surgeons at Cooper” said John P. Sheridan, Jr., President and CEO at Cooper. “In December we will open the new patient Pavilion at Cooper which includes 12 new state-of-the-art operating rooms. Dr. Carpenter will be instrumental in strengthening and expanding our Department of Surgery.”
Dr. Carpenter is a pioneer in his field having performed the first endovascular repair of an aortic aneurysm in Philadelphia, as well as establishing the use of the Magnetic Resonance Angiogram (MRA). He is currently conducting an innovative clinical trial using drug eluting stents outside of the heart as well as a number of other trials of endovascular devices and methods.
He brings to Cooper vast experience in clinical trials involving devices used in minimally invasive surgery as well as his work developing noninvasive methods of diagnosing vascular disease by ultrasound and MRI/MRA. He has published more than 180 articles and book chapters in the field of vascular surgery. He currently serves on the editorial boards of numerous journals, including Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and the Journal of Vascular Surgery.

Dr. Carpenter is a 1986 graduate of Yale University School of Medicine and completed his residency and fellowship training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Carpenter has been named as one of the “Best Doctors in America” for several years in a row. He has been a Philadelphia Magazine “Top Doctor” since 1996. He is listed among “America’s Top Doctors”, “America’s Top Surgeons”, the “Who’s Who in America” (Marquis) in 2008 and also to “Who’s Who in the World” (Marquis) in 2007.
He will begin his new position at Cooper in September 2008.
He currently resides in Radnor, PA with his wife and two children.
