On Thursday, the first of the ‘Summer in the City’ concerts at Cooper Commons Park debuted with the Universal African Dance & Drum Ensemble, the world-renowned African dance troupe based at Camden’s Unity Community Center, having the honor of performing the opening show.
The concerts are made possible thanks to Cooper’s partnership with Symphony in C and the Greater Camden Partnership. Performers from throughout Camden will take the stage for free concerts, all starting at 4:30 p.m. on five Thursdays through early September.
Scheduled concerts throughout the summer include patriotic pops and Americana from members of Symphony in C (July 8), jazz from Red KoolAde Jazz (July 29) and Latin music from the Mikey Mikey Band (Aug. 19). The series wraps with a jazz ensemble comprised of Rowan University faculty members on Sept. 9.
“We’re committed to being good neighbors,” said Susan Bass Levin, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Cooper Foundation. “These concerts are one way we can share with our neighbors and enjoy summertime in the city.”
The Courier-Post published an article about the concert series, which can be viewed on their website at courierpostonline.com. In addition, more information about the concert series can be found on Symphony In C’s website at symphonyinc.org.
