(Camden, NJ) — MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper received a $35,000 grant from the Avon-Pfizer Metastatic Breast Cancer Grants Program: Identify-Amplify-Unify. MD Anderson Cooper was one of only 22 non-profit organizations to receive a grant to support and educate metastatic breast cancer patients, their caregivers, and their communities.
“This funding will allow for an expansion of breast navigation services,” said Generosa Grana, MD, director of MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper. “This grant will allow us to provide a bi-monthly integrative medicine and support group program at our Camden and Voorhees locations for those in the tristate region with metastatic breast cancer.”
“We hope to improve the physical and psychosocial wellbeing of women with metastatic breast cancer,” said Evelyn Robles-Rodriguez, RN, MSN, APN, AOCN, director of outreach, prevention, and survivorship of MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper. “Although metastatic breast cancer can have devastating consequences, this illness does not have to be faced alone. MD Anderson Cooper will partner with affected women to help them live as fully as possible.”
The Avon-Pfizer Metastatic Breast Cancer Grants Program was created in June 2014 to support advocacy, academic and other nonprofit organizations that provide information and services to help people with metastatic breast cancer navigate the medical and emotional challenges associated with their disease. To date, the partners have invested $2 million towards this goal. The first class of grantees announced last year helped more than 32,800 individuals through efforts including nutrition counseling, patient navigation, education and complementary care. Nearly 230 caregivers also benefitted from grantee initiatives, and many more families and community members were supported by this work. In addition, some programs included online content, reaching more than 14 million people with information on metastatic breast cancer.
