A Doctor’s Stories by Dr John McGeehan

Following a serious illness, John McGeehan, MD, a primary care Internist at Cooper University Health Care and professor of clinical medicine at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, set out to write a collection of short stories highlighting moments and insights from his more than 40 years in medicine as a means to aid in his recovery. What resulted is a compelling look at life and health care in a new book, A Doctor’s Stories, published on February 26, 2021.

According to Dr. McGeehan, the true stories are meant to show how humanism, professionalism, and ethical behavior can enrich one’s life and that of others. Using humor and reflection, Dr. McGeehan illustrates that every moment in our life is worth experiencing and each opens an often-unexpected door for us.

“I have been fortunate to lead a life full of amazing experiences and wonderful people. I love to teach and this collection of true, personal stories has allowed me to show my gratitude to all who have shaped me and continue to allow me to grow,” said Dr. McGeehan.

“This is an important collection of stories highlighting essential life lessons for anyone, but especially for those in the medical field,” said Anthony J. Mazzarelli, MD, JD, MBE, co-CEO at Cooper University Health Care. “Dr. McGeehan’s experiences and reflections show the human side of medicine, and we congratulate him on publishing his book.”

Dr. McGeehan is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Perelman School of Medicine, PA. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the Pennsylvania Hospital. He was a primary care physician for more than 30 years and served as the director of medical education and chair of medicine at Mercy Hospital in Scranton, PA. He was an associate dean for student affairs and admissions and is now teaching in the classroom and at the bedside, as well as involved in growing the Center for Humanism at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. He is currently chair of the ethics committee at Cooper University Health Care.
