Welcome to the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) blog page! We will maintain a tab (Abx Stewardship) on the Connect the Doc blog to provide you with important resources you need to make the best decisions for antibiotic prescribing for your patients.
Antimicrobial Stewardship is a nationwide initiative, endorsed by President Obama, and supported by the CDC, and many professional healthcare societies, with the goal to optimize selection of antibiotics, dosing, duration, and clinical outcomes while minimizing unintended consequences of antimicrobial use, including toxicity and the selection for pathogenic/resistant organisms.1
Our program here at Cooper uses a combined strategy of up-front antibiotic restriction/approval and targeted chart reviews of high risk infections (such as bacteremia), bug-drug mismatches, and high risk antibiotics (such as piperacillin-tazobactam). We also review antiretroviral therapy regimens to ensure they are complete.
We look forward to working with you!
