Effective September 7th at 12:00pm, there will be a new Pediatric Blood Transfusion order set available to providers for ordering Red Blood Cells and Plasma. Providers will be now be able to order the blood products by volume. Unit ordering is still available in the order set when needed.
To enable automatic calculation of volume dosing when products are ordered by volume, there will be a change in workflow as the “Transfuse Order” was created as a medication. Unit ordering will function as it does today. Please see the information below for Volume ordering.
- The new order set is called “CUH IP PEDIATRIC TRANSFUSION ORDER SET” and can be found by typing blood or trans.
- The order set will have options for Volume-based ordering and Unit-based ordering for both Red Blood Cells and Plasma.
- Volume Based orders <180 mL
- Unit Based orders >180 mL
Volume Ordering: Selecting the volume based order will automatically place both the product and the transfuse orders. Both orders must be placed to complete the process.
Once you select the dose you will have an option of entering an order specific weight if needed. If the automatic calculation based on the new weight is greater than 180mL/kg you will see this warning. Remove the orders you are placing and switch to Unit-based ordering. DO NOT CONTINUE WITH THE CURRENT ORDER.
