Tips on listening:
- Give patient/family two minutes at the beginning of the encounter to tell their story, without interruptions
- Address the patient’s most pressing concerns
- Be comfortable with silence
- Pay attention to patients’ nonverbal cues and acknowledge emotions
- Monitor your body language
- Summarize key points to ensure everyone is on the same page
