A neurosurgeon’s perspective on burnout and empathy

Attached is an article on burnout, empathy, and grief from the perspective of a senior neurosurgeon, shared with me by a resident colleague. It reminds us that leaning in and opening ourselves up to the pain of our patients through compassion, without being swallowed by it, helps the doctor and the patient. If we were the patient, we would want to connect with others, especially our physician. This is an aspiration we are all called to. We won’t necessarily hit that goal every day or with every patient, but the practice of being truly present to whomever we interact with is something we can work on continually.
