Happy Doctor’s Day

Now more than ever, we want to recognize and celebrate you as our friends and colleagues. With many of you working the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic and caring for our patients in these unprecedented times, you have been extraordinary in your dedication, commitment, and resourcefulness. We have an incredible group of talented physicians at Cooper with whom we are honored to work.

Today is National Doctor’s Day and amidst the current COVID -19 pandemic, it is crucial to take a moment and reflect on the importance of this national holiday.  The first observance of doctors day in Winder, Georgia was done on March 30, 1933 when Dr. Charles B. Almond’s wife, Eudora Brown Almond, wanted to dedicate a day to honor physicians, with the intent to send greeting cards to physicians, their wives, and place flowers on the graves of deceased doctors.  What is often forgotten is that this day marks an important historic date in American Medicine, when on March 30, 1842, Dr. Crawford W. Long MD first used ether to successfully anesthetize a patient undergoing resection of a neck tumor.

March 30, 2020 marks a time when physicians are providing life-saving service during a truly difficult and unpredictable time while fighting the quick spread of the COVID 19 pandemic.  Whether in the United States or abroad, we can reflect again on this day, just as in 1842, while we quickly push forward our own novel protocols, treatment tools, and mobilize our medical forces to win the new challenge of the day.

Happy National Doctor’s Day,

Physician Engagement Committee
