Were you scheduled to have surgery before the COVID-19 outbreak? Are you unsure about what to do now? You may be wondering if it’s safe to have your surgery now. We encourage you to speak to your doctor and not delay any needed health care.

Cooper University Health Care has resumed performing all surgeries. Our teams of surgeons and infectious disease experts have taken a number of steps to protect our patients from COVID-19 infection during their surgeries and inpatient stay.

“We are ready to care for our surgery patients in a safe environment,” says Jeffrey P. Carpenter, MD, Chief and Chairman of the Department of Surgery. “Going beyond the recommendations from the CDC and the New Jersey Department of Health, Cooper has designated non-COVID operating rooms and patient floors within the hospital.”

During the pandemic, Cooper continued to safely perform emergency and life-saving surgeries that could not be delayed. You can feel confident that your Cooper surgical team is experienced and prepared to keep you safe during your procedure and hospital stay.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, we limited surgeries to life-saving procedures that couldn’t be postponed. Our team has constructed a detailed plan of action to ensure our patients are safe and comfortable as we resume a more normal surgical schedule,” Francis R. Spitz, MD, Vice Chief, Department of Surgery, confidently states.

As always, all Cooper surgical facilities and patient rooms are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected in accordance with CDC and Joint Commission standards to minimize the risk of infection during recovery. Additionally, all surgical patients are being tested for COVID-19 at least three days prior to surgery to further minimize the risk of spreading the virus to other patients and the surgical teams.

To further maximize safety, our medical and surgical team will work with patients beforehand to shorten their length of stay in the hospital by preparing them for surgery using standard pre-operative protocols. Surgery patients will be continually monitored after surgery and will be discharged only when appropriate.

“Our goal is to keep patients in the hospital until they can be safely discharged, while keeping the length of stay down,” says Dr. Spitz. “We are now scheduling surgeries for patients who have delayed their procedures, so they can resume their planned course of care.”
