Twenty-nine individuals who gave the ultimate gift of life through organ and tissue donations were remembered during a moving ceremony held at Cooper University Health Care on March 20, 2018.

The donor remembrance event, co-sponsored by Cooper and NJ Sharing Network, included a reading of donor names, pinwheel planting, and a reception to honor those who gave the gift of life through organ and tissue donation. More than 100 family members of deceased organ and tissue donors attended the ceremony to recognize their loved ones.

Cooper University Health Care is among a select group of hospitals nationwide that has been recognized in the past for raising organ and tissue donation awareness in a national campaign sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The campaign has added 400,000 registered organ and tissue donors since 2011.

“Our hospital partners are vital to our life-saving mission,” said Joe Roth, president and CEO of NJ Sharing Network, the state’s organ recovery agency. “With nearly 4,000 people in New Jersey in need of a transplant and 115,000 across the country, the work that our hospital partners do to raise awareness of organ and tissue donation ultimately leads to more patients receiving transplants.”

Cooper conducted awareness and registry campaigns to educate staff, patients, visitors, and community members about the critical need for organ and tissue donors and, by doing so, increased the number of potential donors.
