The U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings are intended to help patients with rare or life-threatening conditions make informed decisions about where to receive care. This year’s U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals list ranks the top hospitals for complex care in 15 specialty areas: cancer; cardiology, heart and vascular surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery; geriatrics; neurology and neurosurgery; obstetrics and gynecology; ophthalmology; orthopaedics; psychiatry; pulmonology and lung surgery; rehabilitation; rheumatology; and urology.

This is the 35th year for the survey. This year’s numerical rankings — which compare more than 4,300 hospitals across the country — are based primarily on patient outcomes (including survival rate and the rate at which patients were able to return home rather than needing additional institutional care), patient experience, care-related factors such as the intensity of nurse staffing and breadth of patient services, and expert opinion obtained through physician survey. Procedure and condition ratings are based on risk-adjusted outcomes, such as 30-day mortality, 30-day readmission and length of stay, as well as volume, nurse staffing and number of specially trained physicians on staff.
