Internationally recognized neonatologist Vineet Bhandari, MBBS, MD, DM, FAAP, who heads the Division of Neonatology at The Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper and serves as Professor of Pediatrics at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, edited the just released concise textbook for medical professionals, Tantalizing Therapeutics in Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia, 1st Edition published by Elsevier. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia, or BPD, is the most common chronic lung disease in infants. It occurs in babies born prematurely and has significant pulmonary and neurodevelopmental sequelae that extend through childhood and up to adulthood. There is no specific and/or effective treatment for this devastating developmental disease. The textbook has 11 topic-oriented chapters and 26 authors from eight different countries.
“I have been working on various aspects of BPD for almost 30 years. It is a difficult disease to manage, and hence the lack of effective and specific treatments for this disease has been extremely troublesome,” said Dr. Bhandari. “This has spurred me to undertake my 3rd book, and as with the others, has been a true labor of love for me. While a wealth of experimental and clinical information is available regarding BPD, I felt a single source that contained the current and upcoming potential therapeutics to combat this condition would be of value to many people.”
The textbook is published in both hard copy and electronic web-based versions, and individual chapters may also be downloaded/purchased. Tantalizing Therapeutics in Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia is a concise reference that provides an overview of emerging concepts in the understanding of lung development and injury from a molecular and cellular point-of-view, including exciting pathways that are paving the way for new options to prevent or treat BPD. Experts who are at the forefront of BPD research wrote the book’s chapters.

Dr. Bhandari has authored 300 journal articles and book chapters and published 2 earlier textbooks (Manual of Neonatology and Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia). He has edited 4 journal issues in the fields of BPD and genetic disorders affecting the newborn, featuring bench, translational and clinical research. He is an associate editor of Pediatric Research, Frontiers in Pediatrics and BMC Pediatrics and on the editorial board of 17 journals including Journal of Perinatology, F1000 Research, Children, among others. He is the past president of the Eastern Society for Pediatric Research. He has been running a research lab for the last 22 years and has been continuously funded by the NIH since 2003. His research has also been funded by national organizations/foundations as well as industry-sponsored.
