Cooper University Health Care Earns Prestigious Designation as an American College of Surgeons Surgical Quality Partner

Cooper University Health Care has been recognized as a Surgical Quality Partner by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), highlighting the institution’s unwavering commitment to delivering the highest standards of surgical care.

“Our designation as an ACS Surgical Quality Partner underscores our dedication to adhering to the most rigorous standards in surgical quality,” said Francis R. Spitz, MD, FACS, Head, Division of General Surgery, Cooper University Health Care. “This achievement reflects our continuous efforts to minimize complications, improve outcomes, and ultimately save lives through the provision of exceptional surgical care.”

Cooper actively participates in multiple ACS Quality Programs, demonstrating a commitment to maintaining excellence across various surgical specialties. Cooper has been recognized by ACS for the following areas:

  • The Commission on Cancer Accreditation (CoC) is dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for patients with cancer. The CoC promotes cancer prevention, treatment, survival, and education, and ensures high-quality, comprehensive, coordinated cancer care.
  • Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) is a comprehensive, nationwide surgical quality program aimed at ensuring the safe and effective performance of metabolic and bariatric surgery. Surgical outcomes focus on weight loss and the treatment of obesity-related diseases, like diabetes, sleep apnea, and others.
  • The National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) improves all aspects of breast cancer and disease care, including screening, prevention, and early detection, as well as accurate diagnosis and correct treatments for breast cancer. By setting the highest standards, the NAPBC ensures that breast centers provide the most comprehensive breast care based on scientific evidence about what works best for every patient.
  • The National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC) requires rectal cancer programs to use a multidisciplinary, holistic approach to improving rectal cancer care. This program is based on international models that lead to better outcomes for patients, including a reduction in recurrence rates, better quality of life, improved function, and increased survival.
  • National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) is the first nationally validated, outcomes-based program to measure and improve the quality of surgical care. Participating hospitals collect data that provides in-depth analysis, helping surgical teams better understand and tailor care to patient needs.
  • The Trauma Verification, Review, and Consultation (VRC) program sets the standard for the care of injured patients in trauma centers. These standards ensure each center has the right expertise and is immediately prepared to provide the highest quality of emergency trauma care. These standards are so rigorous that many states use them to designate trauma centers in their region.

“ACS quality programs are grounded in more than a century of experience and participation is an important measure of a hospital’s surgical quality,” Dr. Spitz said. “As an ACS Surgical Quality Partner, patients can trust Cooper will be providing the best possible patient care, evaluating that care in a rigorous fashion, and dedicating ourselves to continuously improving our program.”
