The multidisciplinary team of cardiac experts from Cooper University Health Care’s Structural Heart Disease Program recently performed the 1000^th TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement) procedure. The procedure was successfully performed on a 71-year-old South Jersey man.

“This represents a major milestone and the culmination of many years of training and experience for our Structural Heart Program and team since starting the TAVR program in 2012,” said Philip A. Read more.

On Saturday, May 22, Cooper University Health Care celebrated the 10,000^th COVID-19 vaccination given at the Cooper Community Vaccination and Education site located at The Salvation Army Kroc Center in Camden, NJ. Camden resident Jose Palma was the recipient of the 10,000^th shot and received a gift bag in recognition of the milestone.

The event featured free food distribution, Mister Softee® ice cream, a variety of clinical health screenings, giveaways, and Q&A sessions to answer vaccination questions. Read more.

Earlier this month, the FDA approved the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for adolescents ages 12 to 15. Cooper University Health Care has received a $25,000 grant from No Kid Hungry to help address childhood hunger and decrease food insecurity in young children.

No Kid Hungry, a campaign from the national nonprofit Share Our Strength, has invested $3 million in grants to organizations focused on early childhood to help decrease food insecurity among children under the age of six. Read more.

May is Trauma Awareness Month, which coincides with the traditional start of the summer travel season. In the United States, trauma is the leading cause of death for ages 1 through 46, with motor vehicle crashes being a significant contributor to trauma-related deaths and injury. Read more.

Philip Norcross, Chairman of The Cooper Foundation, announced that the Foundation is establishing an India COVID-19 Relief Fund to provide urgent support for healthcare infrastructure and medical supplies in those areas of India hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The surge in India rose rapidly over the last month and overwhelmed hospitals in several of the country’s hardest-hit cities. More than 350,000 new cases a day have been reported over the last week according to the World Health Organization. Read more.

Glassboro, NJ — Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) marked the graduation of its 6^th and largest class of medical doctors with a pandemic-style commencement ceremony held on Monday, May 10, 2021.

Cooper Nurse of the Year/Team of the Year Named

Cooper University Health Care has named Elizabeth “Lisa” Moriarty, MSN, RN, of Washington Township, NJ, the 2021 Nurse of the Year. Moriarty, a medical surgical nurse on Cooper’s Pavilion 7 unit, also received the Selma and Martin Hirsch Award for Excellence in Medical Surgical Nursing as part of Cooper’s Annual Nursing Excellence Awards presented during National Nurses’ Week (May 6-12).
