Andres Ferber, MD Hematologic Malignancy Research, funded by the DiFlorio family, to Kamyar Nader, MD, “Malignant Hematology Database at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper”. Dr. Nadar will construct a database of malignant hematological conditions, such as Hodgkin’s lymphoma, non Hodgkin’s lymphomas, multiple myeloma, leukemia, myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative disorders. Summer is here and that means people will be spending more time at outside. While it feels good to catch some rays, it is always important to watch your exposure to the sun. Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined. In fact, according to the National Cancer Institute, one-in-five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of their lifetime. Read more.

When Kristen Rodriguez tweeted to FOX 29’s Mike Jerrick, she had one wish for Father’s Day: that her father might meet the Cooper trauma surgeon who saved his life. On Monday, June 19, the teams at Good Morning Philadelphia and Cooper University Health Care coordinated a surprise to help that wish come true. Seven weeks after Cooper Trauma Surgeon Dr. John Chovanes removed his gallbladder in an emergency surgery, Jack Bender was able to thank him in person. Read more.

“The first thing you want to do is direct pressure to the wound with gloves if you have gloves, of course, for safety. The next thing you want to do is get a tourniquet… what we want to do is get the tourniquet above the wound, between the wound and the heart. Read more.
Women faced with the diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer — cancer that has spread outside of the breast to other parts of the body — may feel uncertain and fearful about their future. Adjusting to ongoing cancer treatment may be overwhelming. But metastatic breast cancer is not a hopeless disease. Many women continue to live long, productive lives with breast cancer in this stage. Cancer survivorship is more than reaching the end of medical care. Survivorship is new set of physical, mental, and emotional triumphs and challenges shared by patients, families, and caregivers.
This week, MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper honored our survivors by hosting several celebrations during Cancer Survivor Week, which began on June 4 with National Cancer Survivors Day.
More than 200 people attended “Being a Savvy Cancer Survivor,” an informative lunch and lecture event for newly diagnosed patients, at the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, New Jersey. Read more.
The International Journal of Radiation Oncology this week published the results of a clinical study led by Anthony E. Dragun, MD, chairman and chief of the Department of Radiation Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper. The study showed that an experimental regimen of a higher dose, once-weekly breast irradiation following lumpectomy has comparable outcomes to the current standard of daily radiation while realizing greater convenience for patients, better compliance and completion rates of the prescribed treatments, and lower costs. A report on the highly successful National Institute for Children’s Health Quality (NICHQ)-led Best Fed Beginnings initiative is featured in the June online edition of the prestigious Pediatrics journal. The piece—Best Fed Beginnings: A Nationwide Quality Improvement Initiative to Increase Breastfeeding—features insights and analysis on the initiative’s major achievements, including driving 80 percent of participating hospitals to achieve “Baby-Friendly” status.
