Nicaragua 2014: First Day in the OR

Our day began at 5:30 a.m. with Nicaraguan coffee and white pineapple for breakfast – delicioso. Our first case was a 12-year-old boy who had a severe congenital flatfoot deformity and walked pigeon-toed. Following four hours of multi-level surgery, a new foot was born AND two baby boys in the OR next to us. On a sad very and disturbing note, we were informed that a beautiful 9-year-old girl was sexually molested, requiring surgical intervention and admission to the hospital. When we finished our day, we were allowed to visit her, and gave her a handmade dress that one of my patients had donated for our trip. In the middle of this tragedy, she still had a smile on her face. What a lesson…
