Another key milestone in the progression of Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) was achieved in early March. The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the national accrediting organization for allopathic medical schools, completed a site visit – a key step in the Preliminary Accreditation process for CMSRU.
During the four-day visit, a three-member ad hoc Survey Team conducted 18 different information-gathering sessions with more than 60 faculty, administrators, and staff from Rowan University, Cooper University Hospital, and CMSRU. At an exit conference at the conclusion of the visit, the Survey Team commended CMSRU on the strong partnership between Rowan and Cooper, the school’s commitment to the community of Camden, and the new medical education building itself.
According to LCME policy, the Survey Team will next prepare a report to be submitted to the full LCME Committee in June. The Committee will review the report and database materials (submitted prior to the site visit) and then render a decision on Preliminary Accreditation.
The CMSRU is part of a $600 million expansion of Cooper’s Health Sciences Campus in Camden. Anticipated to open in fall 2012, the school will accept approximately 50 students in its first year, building to a total capacity of 400.
