CMSRU Student Awarded Prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship

jonathanJonathan Kanen, a second-year medical student at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU), was among 40 people nationwide to be awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. The full-cost scholarship enables him to study at the University of Cambridge, where he will earn a PhD in Psychology. Not only is this a rewarding accomplishment for Kanen, but it marks a milestone for CMSRU, as he is the first CMSRU student awarded this prestigious learning opportunity.

Recipients of the Gates Cambridge Scholarships are not only individuals who fit the Cambridge mission, but those who exude intellect and leadership, and are dedicated to improving the lives of others. The process is extraordinarily competitive and scholarships are only granted to exceptional postgraduate students outside of the United Kingdom.

“Jonathan is an excellent student and a kind and caring person,” says Paul Katz, MD, Dean of CMSRU. “He is a role model at CMSRU and for the entire Rowan community; and we are all extremely proud of his accomplishment.”

Kanen will research serotonin’s influence on psychological disorders while at Cambridge. He begins his three-year PhD program there in fall 2015. He will return to CMSRU in 2018 to finish his final two years of medical school. Kanen’s long-term goals include becoming a psychiatrist and researching new and better ways to treat patients with mental illness.
