Patient Safety Sentinel: Proper Use of Hand Sanitizer

Per CDC, Alcohol Hand Sanitizer is the preferred means to sanitize hands in healthcare settings when hands are not visibly soiled.

How is Hand Hygiene with Alcohol Hand Sanitizer Performed?

  • Put enough alcohol hand sanitizer in cupped hands to cover all surfaces of hands.

  • Rub hands palm to palm.

  • Right palm over left dorsum interlace fingers and vice versa.

  • Palm to palm with finger interlaced.

  • Back of fingers to opposing palms with fingers interlocked.

  • Rotational rubbing of the left thumb clasped in the right palm and vice versa.

  • Rotational rubbing backward and forward with clasped fingers of right hand in left palm and vice versa.

  • Rub until dry..

  • This should take around 15-20 seconds.
  • Do not rinse or wipe off the hand sanitizer before it dries.
