Power Plant Construction Update: Work Starts Wednesday, August 29

Construction is continuing on the new power plant that will provide Cooper with efficient power and the ability to provide power during emergency outages. The power plant will connect to all Cooper buildings located on the Health Sciences Campus.

The project is continuing in phases that will result in periodic road closures and traffic pattern changes in the area around Cooper’s Emergency Department. All hospital services will remain open and available during these temporary road closures; however, they may affect commute times to and from the hospital. Please expect delays and plan accordingly.  Here’s the latest.

Wednesday, August 29 through August 31, 2018: Benson Street Closed Between 7th & 6th Streets From 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Each Day

  • Benson Street will be closed between 7th & 6th streets to through traffic, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
  • One-way traffic westbound from 7th to Broadway will be permitted 4 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next morning.
  • Pedestrians will have access to the sidewalk on the south side of Benson Street.
  • Emergency vehicle access to the Emergency Department will not be interrupted during this period.
  • Shuttle service will continue at Kelemen Circle, but private vehicles are not permitted for drop-off/pick-up.
  • Benson Street entrance to parking garage will be accessible via detour route (see below). Stevens Street entrance will be open as normal.
  • Exiting CCIA garage from Benson Street side will require right turn (toward Broadway); no left turn.

Labor Day Weekend

Benson Street will resume normal traffic from Friday, August 31, 2018 at 4 p.m. through Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at 6 a.m.

September 4 through September 14, 2018:  Benson Street Temporarily One Way

  • Beginning Tuesday, September 4, 2018, Benson Street resumes one-way westbound from 7th to Broadway.
  • Emergency vehicle access to the Emergency Department will not be interrupted during this period.
  • Shuttle service will continue at Kelemen Circle, but private vehicles are not permitted for drop-off/pick-up.

Camden County Metro Police, Camden County Sheriff’s Department, and Cooper Security will assist with traffic control and navigation during construction.
