Cooper University Health Care welcomes Thomas Runkle, MS, PhD, as the new Vice President of Supply Chain, which was previously held by Steve Warrington.

Before joining Cooper, Tom served in several health system leadership roles, including Chief Operating Officer for St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, Associate Administrator and Director of Operations for Hahnemann University Hospital, and Regional Director of Clinical Engineering for Tenet Health System. Tom also served as a Sergeant in the 15th Medical Squadron for the United States Air Force in Oahu, HI.

Tom will oversee Cooper’s procurement and supply chain operation to help us meet our safety and quality goals as well as drive greater efficiency.

After a successful seven-year tenure at Cooper University Health Care, Jay Raman, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, has decided to retire at the end of March 2019. Jay joined Cooper in 2012 after serving in a number of senior leadership positions with the Reading Hospital and Medical Center and Stanley Healthcare Solutions. Jay has been instrumental in improving our IT systems and overseeing and stabilizing our conversion to Epic. We are grateful for all Jay has done to help us succeed during the past several years of tremendous growth at Cooper. We wish her all the best in retirement.

A national search will be launched to fill Jay’s position. Upon Jay’s retirement and until her replacement is named, we have appointed Dustin Hufford as Interim Chief Information Officer and Joe Collins as Interim Chief Technology Officer to lead these functions.

Sean Murphy has been appointed Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Cooper University Health Care. Murphy has replaced Gary Lesneski, who retired as Senior Executive Vice President and General Counsel at the end of 2018. Lesneski, who will continue to serve Cooper in a part-time capacity as Special Counsel, has provided legal guidance to Cooper for more than 25 years, first as outside counsel and for the past eight years as General Counsel.

In his new role, Sean will be responsible for all legal affairs and will manage and lead the health system’s Legal and Risk Management departments. Sean has extensive experience in health law, including corporate health care, innovation, and health care strategy.

Additionally, we are pleased to announce that Eileen Macklin and Michael McCarthy have both been promoted to Deputy General Counsel and will serve in that capacity along with current Deputy General Counsel Sharon Dostmann. Eileen and Michael have been key members of our legal team for a number of years.

By way of background, Murphy spent 20 years as Senior Vice President and corporate general counsel for the former JFK Health System based in Edison, which is now part of Hackensack Meridian Health. Murphy also has significant private practice experience in health care law, practicing at both at a national law firm, as well as a boutique, Pittsburgh-based, health law firm. Sean also served in the United States Air Force Medical Corps, active duty, achieving the rank of Captain. A graduate of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, Murphy received a master’s degree in hospital administration from The George Washington University, and his law degree from Rutgers University School of Law in Newark.
