Daisy Award Winner: Sara Wertz, BSN, RN

Sara Wertz BSN, RN, daytime staff nurse from the Kelemen 9 unit, is the Daisy Award winner for May 2022. Sara’s dedication to Cooper Nursing and the extraordinary care she provided to our Cooper patients earned her the following accolade:

“I recently was a patient at Cooper University Hospital after I was transferred from an outside hospital on April 29 to May 9, 2022. During my stay, I met several nurses who took amazing care of me.

One nurse stands out, compared to the rest. Sara Wertz saved my life. Beginning on Friday, May 6, my left arm [started to swell]. Saturday morning, Sarah began her shift at 7 a.m., [and] my left [arm] was worse.

The attendant and resident were going to discharge me; however, Sarah felt I needed a test because I was in so much pain. She convinced both doctors to send me for an ultrasound. I am able to type this letter today due to Sarah’s excellent care and concern. She literally saved my life. It turns out I had two blood clots in my left arm, above my elbow. Doctors are great at diagnosing, yet nurses get to know their patients. Sarah deserves a Daisy Award. I am so blessed and grateful to have lived. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.”
