Celebrating Juneteenth

Juneteenth, which is recognized nationally on June 19, marks the end of the institution of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to declare that “all slaves are free.” This was more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation because slaveholders had withheld that information. The National Museum of African American Culture and History calls Juneteenth “our country’s second independence day.” However, the work of ending hatred, discrimination, and racism – and of honoring the promises of liberty and equal opportunity – must continue.

Cooper is proud to sponsor four Juneteenth celebrations this year, all of which take place in surrounding communities on Saturday, June 17, 2023.
